My mom just called to tell me that my grammy passed away this morning. I’ve been expecting this news for the better part of the last year and even more so in the past week. I knew that when I saw her in April that it was goodbye, but that doesn’t make it any less sucky to deal with. I’m not sure why we share these details with the internet because it all seems rather intimate for a public forum. However, I need a place to parse through my thoughts, so here we are. Can I tell you about my grammy? She was awesome. She was a mother to five (my mom was the fourth), grandmother to sixteen, and great-grandmother to, well, a bunch of kids. She made homemade bread—wheat and white—every single week. She traveled the world, made a mean quilt, and beat breast cancer. She loved my grandpa and oh, how my granddaddy has loved her. As her health has deteriorated, my granddaddy has stayed by her side and has been patient beyond belief. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more Christlike love first-hand. One of my favorite memories of my grammy was when I sat next to her at church probably fifteen years ago. During the second verse of the hymn we were singing, she leaned over to me and said that she was going to sing alto. She started (and I followed suit), but she was a few tones off and we both started to giggle. We couldn’t make it through the rest of the song. That’s the kind of woman she was. She loved without limits and didn’t mind laughing in church. She would’ve been 90 next month.
